If you would like to make an appointment, contact the Writing Center at 410-617-5415 or send an email to lwc@loyola.edu with a brief description of your assignment. You can also make appointments online via TutorTrac. Students can request a tutor following these simple steps:

• Using Firefox as your browser (not Internet Explorer), log into TutorTrac using your Loyola user name and password. (This is the same as your log in for Moodle, Web Advisor, email, Inside Loyola, etc.)
• In the Student Options box in the left-hand corner, choose “Search Availability.”
• Then choose “The Writing Center” from the “Centers” dropdown menu. Evergreen is the default center location; graduate students who want to be tutored at Evergreen, Columbia or Timonium should select that campus from the drop-down menu. Please note that graduate tutors meet with graduate students only.
• Choose the course you need writing tutoring in from the “Sections” dropdown menu. (Only the courses you are enrolled in this semester or "self-sponsored" will appear.)
• Choose the date and time you would like to make a tutoring appointment.
• Important: We suggest choosing “All” availability. By selecting all, you will see the full writing center schedule for the next two weeks.
• Select the appointment time you want and your preferred appointment length (1/2 hour or 1 hour). You will receive an appointment confirmation email immediately and an appointment reminder email 24-hours before your scheduled appointment.

What to Expect at a Conference

Appointments at the Writing Center range from thirty minutes to one hour, and are one-on-one, individualized consultations. To help you with this appointment, please read the following information to prepare yourself for the time with a consultant.

Before you come to the Writing Center, read your paper and think of what you want to cover in the hour session. Is the main point clear in this essay? Do your transitions work? Are there enough details to make this interesting? Have an idea of what you want to cover in this hour.

Remember to bring your paper and a copy of the assignment. A hard copy is best; however, you may also bring a jump drive or email a copy of the paper to yourself.

If you are at the planning stage of your writing, bring a list of questions or possible ideas to discuss.

Bring a pen. You may want to bring extra paper if you want to take notes.

The day of your appointment, please arrive on time.

During the appointment, you and your consultant may discuss a variety of different higher order concerns (interpreting assignment or instructor's comments, brainstorming/getting ideas/outlining, research strategies, development of examples/evidence, logic/coherence of ideas) and later order concerns (introduction/conclusion, sentence structure, citation style, word choice, voice).

The specific issues you discuss will depend on your concerns or your interests and where you are in the writing process. You may decide to schedule a follow up appointment, too.
