Summer Research Grant Application Form

Applications are due on January 19, 2024.

The Summer Research Grant Program offers a $4,000 stipend to tenured and tenure-track faculty members for the conduct of research in their discipline. Generally, 35 awards are made each year. Grants are recommended by the Research and Sabbatical Committee (R&SC) and approved by the vice president for academic affairs. All applications must adhere to the guidelines stated. Any application that does not follow the guidelines will be rejected.

Loyola also awards three Mid-Career Summer Grants to faculty holding the rank of associate professor.

The Summer Research Grant Program guidelines were updated in fall 2016. The updates include 1) a reminder that summer grant recipients may teach no more than one summer course; 2) a request for information as to why the grant is critical to the applicant’s research; and 3) where applicable, a discussion of why a Mid-Career Summer Grant applicant’s project fits the program criteria.

Information Concerning the Summer Research Grant Program

The R&SC wishes to remind faculty members that they must adhere to the requirements for submission of the summer research grant program for their applications to be reviewed. These requirements are as follows:

  1. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on the first Friday of the spring semester.
  2. Applications must be submitted electronically using the link above.
  3. Applicants may not have received a grant through the R&SC program for both of the previous two years.
  4. The applicant’s name may not appear in the application.
  5. The applicant must have submitted the required final reports for all R&SC funded grants received since 2008-09.

Given the growth of applications that the committee receives, the above requirements will be adhered to strictly. Applicants will receive a system generated confirmation once their proposal has been submitted. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) also will send an email confirmation that the application has been received. After the deadline has passed the ORSP will review all applications to ensure that they meet the requirements listed above. Only those applications that meet these criteria will be forwarded to the R&SC for review. Thank you for your attention to these guidelines.

The following links provide an example of a successful proposal from each of the major disciplinary areas.

In order to conserve paper resources, proposals must be submitted electronically.

Mid-Career Summer Grants

Academic Affairs also augments the Summer Research Grant program with additional grants to support the specific needs of midcareer faculty. Mid-Career Summer Grant applications are designed to assist faculty whose research progress may have been affected due to service and/or administrative work. These earmarked grants are designed to support the crucial preparatory work for faculty at the Associate rank to re-energize their scholarly agenda or to enter a new field of inquiry beyond one’s initial area of specialization. This opportunity is part of the  Finding the Path initiative to bring institutional support and attention to the challenges often faced at mid-career. There is no separate application. To be considered, please mark the “mid-career grant” box on the application form and include a 200-word Mid-Career Discussion section in your application that provides some context to why your application fits the criteria.

Summer Research Grant Activity Report

A brief report should be turned in to the ORSP by December 1 the year following the award.
