Designation change to be observed The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) officially endorsed on March 25, 2009, Loyola College in Maryland’s request to change its designation to “university” and adopt the name “Loyola University Maryland.” (View pdf of endorsement letter). While the official endorsement from the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) references a designation change date of Aug. 19, Loyola has decided to observe the historic milestone after the start of the academic year, when it will be easier for all members of the Loyola community to participate. The celebration will begin on the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 25, which is the first day of Family Weekend. This date will also mark the College of Arts and Sciences’ transition to its new name: “Loyola College.” Friday’s events will include a convocation ceremony and, on Saturday evening, festivities will include a campus-wide reception, live music and fireworks. The Executive Committee of Loyola’s Board of Trustees first announced the decision to change the university’s designation in August 2008. The specific name “Loyola University Maryland” was chosen to reaffirm the university’s enduring connection to its home state, as well as to underscore the distinctions between this university and the other “Loyola Universities” in Louisiana, Illinois and California.
