 45 Years of  Service

In 1962, Father John J. Burns, Dean of Loyola College Evening School, invited Morton M. Esterson to join the Education faculty of Loyola College.  This summer, Affiliate Professor Esterson begins his 45th year of teaching at Loyola.

Esterson has taught seven different courses in the field of special education, but his favorite is the Introduction to Special Education course which he has taught for 128 semesters. He also taught Administration and Supervision of Special Education at the Johns Hopkins University for five years.

In 1981, Esterson retired from the Baltimore City Public School System after having served thirty years as a teacher, administrator, and superintendent of special education.  Following his retirement, two schools named their media center in his honor.

Professor Esterson received the Loyola/Mount Saint Agnes Bene Merenti award on March 27, 1987 from the late President of Loyola College, Father Joseph A. Sellinger, S.J.

For many years, he served as a member of the board of directors of The Chimes, Inc., The Hearing and Speech Agency of Metropolitan Baltimore, The Childrens Guild, and The Saint Elizabeth School.

Throughout his more than fifty year career in  special education, he has lectured widely on topics in special education.  In 1986, he coauthored a text, Related Services for Handicapped Children which was published by College Hill Press.  He currently holds membership in numerous professional societies, including the Council for Administrators of Special Education, Phi Delta Kappa, Public School Administrators and Supervisors Association, Council for Exceptional Children, Maryland State Retired Teachers Association, and the National Retired Teachers Association.
