To graduate as a Reading Specialist, students are required to take the Praxis II: Reading Specialist Test (0300) after the completion of RE737 & RE739, but during or immediately following RE758. Do you need support for research? The International Reading Association assists teachers, researchers, and graduate students through grants and awards to conduct research studies in reading/literacy. The Teacher as Researcher Grant program is available to pre K-12 teachers with full or permanent half time teaching responsibilities, librarians, Title I teachers, classroom teachers, and resource teachers. Applicants may apply as a collaborative group or individually. Grant requests can be for up to US $5,000; IRA prefers smaller grant awards in order to provide support for as many teacher researchers as possible. Deadline for submission is January 15, 2009. The Steven A. Stahl Research Grant program, established to honor the memory and the work of Steven A. Stahl and to provide support of promising graduate students who have at least three years of teaching experience conducting classroom research in reading and literacy instruction. This is an annual award of US$1,000. Deadline for submission is January 15, 2009. The Nila Banton Smith Research Dissemination Support Grant program assists in the dissemination of research (e.g., a literature review, meta-analysis, monograph, or other work) to the educational community. All International Reading Association members, including student members working on a research dissemination activity, are eligible to apply for the grant. The support shall not exceed US $5,000. Deadline for submission is January 15, 2009. All applicants must be members of the International Reading Association. I understand that if I do not complete a course for three consecutive semesters I must reapply for admission to the program.
I understand that if I am admitted as a provisional student I must complete RE 510, RE 523, and RE 531 and earn a B or better in each course to continue in the program.
I understand that classes are offered at Timonium and Columbia Graduate Centers and Belvedere Center and I may have to travel to any of those campuses to complete my program.
I understand that as a general rule of thumb, a 3-credit course requires approximately 6 to 9 hours of outside work per class session. While this will vary from class to class and from individual to individual, it is a general guide for planning the number of courses to which you can commit each semester.
I understand that I will be expected to use the Internet and Blackboard as learning tools and as a means to communicate with instructors and classmates.
I agree to comply with all College policies regarding plagiarism and understand that any plagiarized work will lead to a grade of F for the course and dismissal from the College.
I agree to keep confidential all information about students, families or schools that may be used in case studies, shared in class discussions, or used in other instructional activities.
I understand that coursework is to be completed within the semester that a course is offered and that only under extenuating circumstances and at the discretion of the instructor will an Incomplete be given. I understand it is my responsibility to review and follow the College policies regarding an Incomplete.
I understand that it is my responsibility to communicate with my advisor each semester to discuss any changes to my program plan. I also understand that it is my responsibility to inform my advisor of any changes in my status including name, address, email, or telephone number changes.
I understand that I am responsible for applying for graduation at the beginning of the semester in which I plan to graduate.
The following applies to Reading Specialists only:
I understand that the state of Maryland requires all candidates to have or be eligible for early childhood, elementary, or secondary certification and to have three years of full-time teaching to be certified as MD Reading Specialist.
I understand that to be certified as a reading specialist I must complete a 6 credit Practicum either during the summer or on Saturdays during the school year. I also understand that space is limited in the Practicum. |
