Seven Layer Network Model Activity

In order to explore the concept of how a computer network is constructed and all the things that must happen to ensure that your data gets to the right place and gets there intact, we are going to perform an exercise in constructing networks. This exercise will introduce you to the lower layers of the Seven Layer Network Model.

The class will be divided into groups of 4 or 5. Each group will work together to complete the activities for each of the layers. When you have completed all the layers, you will demonstrate your system in front of the class. Early layers will require communication between two people, and the final layer will require communication in a group.

Rules:

  1. You will plan and discuss strategies and protocols in advance with your group.
  2. In the demonstration, no direct communication is allowed, including oral or visual communication. To ensure this, for most of the layers, you will have your backs to one another.
  3. Members of a group must stand at least 6 feet apart from each other member.
  4. You may only use the supplies that are given to you.
  5. The instructor reserves the right to interfere with your communication at any time.

Each group will receive a bag of supplies. None of the supplies are necessary to complete this exercise. The most accurate representation of a computer network would only use the string, but that would make your task very difficult, so you may use any or all of the supplies given to you.

You must complete the layers in order because each layer depends on the previous layer. The numbers in parentheses correspond to the layer of the Seven Layer Network Model that you will be performing. Be creative and be thoughtful.
