- Global (and non-global) telecollaborative projects have the
following advantages (providing something that is missing from your
classroom), found in Peters, p. 82:
- Perspective consciousness:
Awareness that each of us has a worldview, or "cognitive map," that is
not universally shared by others and may be shaped by factors that we
are unaware of and unable to control. [On the most basic level, think
about the number of continents we discussed the first night. --David]
- Knowledge of world conditions
(also called "state-of-the-planet awareness"): Knowledge of prevailing
and emergent world conditions, including population growth, migration,
economic conditions, natural resources, and physical environment;
political developments, science and technology, law, health, and
international and intranational conflicts.
- Cross-cultural awareness: Respect for and knowledge of the differing ideas, values, and practices found in human societies throughout the world.
- Knowledge of global dynamics:
Understanding how the world works and, in particular, understanidng the
key features and mechanisms of various global systems (e.g., cultural,
economic, political, ecological, and social).
- Knowledge of alternatives
(also called "awareness of human choices"): Awareness of alternatives
to practices like unrestrained economic growth, current foreign
aid/technical assistance policies, and existing consumption patterns.
- "You should also not begin a global collaboration just
because of the 'coolness factor'--students increasingly demand
relevancy, especially older students. Sometimes our innovative efforts
in the classroom fail and can seem like a waste, but we have to examine
the reasons, for any new initiative takes time for both teachers and
students to get used to." -p. 98

- Be sure to play with CSS using the Try It Yourself Feature of http://www.w3schools.com/css/
- CSS Practice
- Try to create something interesting with CSS.
- If you are at the basic level, just try to create a couple of
pages with interesting styling (CSS Styling) and some bordered areas
(CSS Box Model). For example, get paragraphs indented and spaced the
way you want.
- If you are already comfortable with basic styling, try to
create pages with different layouts, perhaps playing with:
- Put your practice work online (using your Loyola Web space or any other Web space)
- Exit Ticket
- Send an email to the class list (et630@googlegroups.com)
with the subject "Exit Ticket"
- This email should contain a link to your most interesting CSS
page that you developed while playing
- This page can be something you developed just to play with the
features, or it can be something you plan to use for your Web Site
