BOOKWORM PROJECT 2007
The Bookworms literacy workshops at St. Mary's Elementary School started last week and will take place every Thursday from 3:00 - 4:15. Four or five English majors are involved, and they work with about a dozen 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. The Loyola students have each student read a few paragraphs from a book, finishing about a chapter/story each session, and the students then do a craft related to the book, act out the story, or write their own story. Anyone interested in participating should email Sarah Biernacki. The Department bid farewell to thirty-three seniors who graduated with English majors this spring; in addition two students were graduated with split or interdisciplinary majors and four with English minors. STUDENT-ORGANIZED EVENTS - Members of LoCoLitSo, The English literary society, organized two Scrabble nights, one each semester, during which students and faculty matched vocabularies and wits over Scrabble boards and shared light refreshments.
- Emily Rosen, co-president of LoCoLitSo, organized a trip to the Loyola production of the The Crucible for her class from Overlea High School as a LoCoLitSo service project. She brought an AP class of Eleventh graders because, as she said....
They are trying to figure out whether to go to college or pursue a career. While these students are bright, because of financial difficulties they believe that college is not affordable. I wanted my class to see the opportunities that college will afford them and let them know that there are options for paying for college. Emily received grants from the Education Department and the Year of the City committee to provide theater tickets, transportation, and dinner at Boulder Cafe for the students. Her mentor teacher, Jenna Zava, chaperoned the event with her. At dinner, the students discussed the play and how seeing the stage version enhanced or detracted from the experience of reading the play in class. Emily reported that the students "loved the trip and raved about it for weeks. They also asked may questions about Loyola and attending college."
STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS - Two recipients of 2006 summer research grants, Katlyn Massimino and Dave Robbins, worked under the direction of Mark Osteen to create and film a screenplay. Their 25-minute movie, The Fishbowl, was shown at the Loyola Film Festival in May.
- Emily Oswald (2006) had an article on Paul Laurence Dunbar's illustrated poetry collections published in the Summer 2006 issue of Book history. Emily found primary materials for the article during two stints working as a research assistant for Jean Lee Cole. She drafted the article under Jean's supervision.
