Biography

Doris Van Doren, Professor of Marketing, has been associated with Loyola College in Maryland since 1983.  She received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in College Park in 1980.  Her dissertation was based on a study of the requirements for job success and self-development of retail personnel.  She received her Masters and Bachelor of Arts degrees from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.

Doris Van Doren has been a training instructor/consultant for the past twenty years.  Her major focus has been increasing productivity and developing personnel through effective management and marketing skills.  During this period, she estimates her training has included over 10,000 individuals in both the public and private sectors.  Dr. Van Doren not only trains adult learners in the Executive MBA program at Loyola College, but also teaches graduates and noncredit program students.  This diverse experience won her Loyola College's coveted Outstanding Professor of the Year in 1989.  In 1996, she was recognized as one of Loyola's Top Eight Teachers with the distinction of Affecting Eternity.  Since 1988, she has lead the International Marketing European Study Tour.  This global experience is incorporated in her managerial approaches to training.

Private organizations to whom Dr. Van Doren has presented training include BT/Alex Brown, Mercantile Bank & Trust, Baltimore Gas and Electric, Eastman Kodak, W.R. Grace, Pfizer, GTE, and the Atlantic Research Corporation.  State and local programs have included a four year commitment to the Maryland State Department of Transportation, a ten year contract with Arlington County Government, and a fifteen year relationship with Montgomery County Government.  Federal government assignments include two years of special request programs with the Social Security Administration and two middle management programs for the Department of Defense.

She has conducted research in the areas of management, consumer behavior, nonprofit marketing, sales management, and professional services.  Dr. Van Doren has won the Best Paper in Marketing Education given by the Midwest Marketing Association.  She has served as Chairperson of the Board of Rank and Tenure at Loyola College.  What is most unique about Doris Van Doren is the unusual combination of academic preparation and practical experience.  The result is theoretically sound and dynamic teaching and training programs which provide the essential knowledge and skills but also touch the attitude of participants.  Her goal is to have adult learners leave a program with three critical outcomes:  I understand this; I can apply this; and I feel positive about my ability to succeed.

Her passions include cats, collies, and skiing.
