Biography
Doris Van Doren, Professor of
Marketing, has been associated with Loyola College in Maryland since 1983. She
received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in College Park in 1980. Her
dissertation was based on a study of the requirements for job success and self-development
of retail personnel. She received her Masters and Bachelor of Arts degrees from
Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.
Doris Van Doren has been a training
instructor/consultant for the past twenty years. Her major focus has been increasing
productivity and developing personnel through effective management and marketing
skills. During this period, she estimates her training has included over 10,000
individuals in both the public and private sectors. Dr. Van Doren not only trains
adult learners in the Executive MBA program at Loyola College, but also teaches graduates
and noncredit program students. This diverse experience won her Loyola College's
coveted Outstanding Professor of the Year in 1989. In 1996, she was recognized as
one of Loyola's Top Eight Teachers with the distinction of Affecting Eternity. Since
1988, she has lead the International Marketing European Study Tour. This global experience is incorporated in
her managerial approaches to training.
Private organizations to whom Dr. Van
Doren has presented training include BT/Alex Brown, Mercantile Bank & Trust, Baltimore
Gas and Electric, Eastman Kodak, W.R. Grace, Pfizer, GTE, and the Atlantic Research
Corporation. State and local programs have included a four year commitment to the
Maryland State Department of Transportation, a ten year contract with Arlington County
Government, and a fifteen year relationship with Montgomery County Government.
Federal government assignments include two years of special request programs with the
Social Security Administration and two middle management programs for the Department of
Defense.
She has conducted research in the
areas of management, consumer behavior, nonprofit marketing, sales management, and
professional services. Dr. Van Doren has won the Best Paper in Marketing Education
given by the Midwest Marketing Association. She has served as Chairperson of the
Board of Rank and Tenure at Loyola College. What is most unique about Doris Van
Doren is the unusual combination of academic preparation and practical experience.
The result is theoretically sound and dynamic teaching and training programs which provide
the essential knowledge and skills but also touch the attitude of participants. Her
goal is to have adult learners leave a program with three critical outcomes: I
understand this; I can apply this; and I feel positive about my ability to succeed.
Her passions include cats, collies,
and skiing.
