Biography

I have been teaching at Loyola part-time (one class a semester) since the Spring 2005 semester.  My full-time job is a Senior Economist in the Office of the Actuary at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).  In this job, which I have had since 2001, I primarily work on short-run (10 years) and long-run (75 years) projections of national health spending.  Before I came to CMS, I worked as a Economist for the Government Division at the Bureau of Economic Analysis for seven years on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimates.

My wife Kara and I live in a house about a mile outside of campus with our two boys: Charlie (4) and Finn (2).

There is one more thing I need to put on this page.  Because I am 6’9”, I get a lot of questions from students about my basketball career.  Also, I was told that I could put “whatever I want” on this personal faculty web page.  Therefore, the bottom of this page will answer some commonly asked questions and give me a place that I can go to often to relive my glory days.

Dunk!

I did play college basketball at St. Mary's College of Maryland and I am still a big supporter of this program.  I started at center for three of my four years there, I still hold the all-time blocked shots record at the school, and I was named a Division III Academic All-American during my junior and senior years.

However, since I did not play Division I basketball, some of my less-gifted students have questioned my ability to play against a team like Loyola.  For ten years after I finished playing in college, I played on an exhibition team named Team Champion and we played local college basketball teams before their season started.  Loyola was only courageous enough to schedule an exhibition with us two times in those 10 years and the box score for one of these games can be seen here.  As you can see, even though I spent 9 hours of that day working behind a desk, I came to Reitz Arena and none of those guys could stop me.  In fact, had I been given more playing time, I’m sure that we would have won this game.

Finally, fifteen years ago, my St. Mary’s team traveled to the USAir Arena (where the DC NBA team used to play) to play a game against Mary Washington College on Home Team Sports.  The two links below are some highlights from the game in two different video player formats.  Enjoy!
