FILM STUDIES

Loyola College's interdisciplinary minor in Film Studies offers courses in film history and theory, national cinema traditions, genre studies, and video and digital production processes. Students interested in any aspect of film can easily integrate program courses with their work in other major fields of study.

Film is the quintessential art form of the postmodern world. As such it has had a profound impact not only on the other arts, but also on the way that human beings think, perceive, and feel. The Minor in Film Studies provides students with the skills needed to understand cinema as both an art form and a reflection of modern history and consciousness by promoting a stronger critical awareness of the power of images in our culture. The skills learned in the minor also help prepare students for careers in public relations, teaching, journalism, government, the arts, and business. The Film Studies program allows students to declare a Minor in Film Studies, in which they may combine courses taken in a number of disciplines -- Communication, English, Fine Arts, History, Modern Languages, Philosophy -- into a cohesive program of study. The introductory course, Fundamentals of Film Studies, provide the historical foundation and technical knowledge needed for the elective courses. The Capstone Seminar permits juniors and seniors to draw upon their previous film courses, focus on a particular topic, and experience the challenges and rewards of a seminar format.
