The Fine Arts Courses at Loyola are designed to
provide students with a broad exposure to the visual and performing arts
and to develop the basic technical skills necessary to pursue further training
for a professional career in the arts. The fine arts curriculum is
comprehensive, and includes courses in art history, drama, music theory,
music history and performance, photography, cinema, and studio arts
(drawing, painting, printmaking, clay, and sculpture).
Introductory level courses build the basic
foundation in each discipline, and no previous experience is necessary.
Upper division courses offer more specialized studies, building upon the
experiences of the creative process. Students may elect to major or minor
in Fine Arts or to combine a Fine Arts major with a major in another
discipline, in addition to taking courses for personal enrichment.
Advanced students may apply to take an internship or to undertake a
senior project in a specific discipline. Department sponsored field trips
to museums, galleries, and professional performances in Baltimore and other cities are
available to all students. All Loyola students choose one Fine Arts
course as an integral dimension of the Core Curriculum.
All Fine Arts programs are located in the Julio Fine Arts Wing of the DeChiaro College Center, which houses not only the
College’s theatre but also rehearsal and practice rooms for the
performing arts, a specialized class room for art history lectures, and
fully-equipped studios for clay, drawing, painting, printmaking, and
photography, as well as specialized spaces such as an acid room for
printmaking, a clay green room, a black-and-white and color darkrooms.
Regularly scheduled exhibitions and performances expose Fine Arts
students to new creative works by practicing professionals, critics, and
others.
