Engineering & Society: Engineering, Design, and Creative Problem Solving in the Built World

Professor: Suzanne Keilson
Location: DS 151
Class Meeting Time: TTH 3:05 - 4:20 p.m.
Fourth Hour: T 4:20 - 5:10 p.m.

Pyramids, Gothic cathedrals, and bridges, as well as transportation, communication, and sanitation systems, are just some of the examples of our engineered world. This course explores what makes engineering unique in the sciences: the elements of design and creative problem-solving. Emphasis is placed on the historical and social contexts of engineering design, evolution, and failure. The course helps students understand the threats and promises that surround engineering decision-making under conditions of risk, uncertainty, and moral ambiguity.

Suzanne Keilson is a native New Yorker who earned her doctorate in applied physics from Columbia University. Her post-doctoral studies in the signal processing of speech by the auditory system brought her to Baltimore.
