Calculus I

This course is appropriate for all majors and covers the standard topics of Calculus I in a rigorous fashion. We learn about limits, derivatives, and anti-derivatives and their applications. This course will also include historical and contemporary readings, and we will practice writing about mathematics. As an Alpha section we will discuss advising issues, go on a field trip and varius other outings, and get to know each other outside of class.

Prerequisite: one year of high school calculus.

W. Ethan Duckworth received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in 2000, taught at Rutgers University for four years, and has been at Loyola since 2004. His research is in abstract algebra and group theory. At Loyola he has been involved with the Math Club and has taken a special interest in making writing part of math classes.
