Moving the World with Your Words

Professor: Ron Tanner
Class Meeting Time: MWF 11:00 - 11:50
Fourth Hour: W 3:00 - 3:50

In small-group workshops and through writing exercises designed to make you a self-sufficient thinker, you will examine how writers gain their authority; how they try to move you with their written words; and how you can move others with words of your own. You will read many essays on provocative topics—specifically, about gender and racial issues—which will complicate your thinking and help strengthen your ability to uncover the codes, cues, and clues that are embedded in everything from advertisements to sophisticated arguments. By the end of the course, you will surprise yourself not only by how well—and how much—you write, but also by how well you can analyze the many assumptions and misdirections that manipulate most people. There will be no exams, no easy answers, and no tidy lessons.

Ron Tanner holds creative writing degrees from the University of North Carolina and the University of Iowa, as well as a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He has published stories and essays widely in literary journals. For more, visit www.ronaldtanner.com.
