Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of Frequently Asked Questions we've been asked over the years.  If you have a question that is not answered below, contact The Office of the Dean of First-Year Students and Academic Services at 410-617-5547 or email fyp@loyola.edu.

What are First-Year Programs?

  • Learning communities designed and taught with beginning scholars in mind
  • Opportunities to learn what a Jesuit, Catholic education is all about

Why should I take a First-Year Program?

  • Gain a smoother transition to college life
  • Develop lasting friendships with other members of the Program
  • Take classes taught by professors who also serve as their students’ academic advisors
  • Learn to make the most of your Loyola College experience
  • Enjoy a chance to better appreciate Baltimore as your home-away-from-home

How does a First-Year Program fit into my studies?

The Alpha Program is a 3-credit academic course that freshmen may take in the Fall semester. It can be a Core, Major, or Elective course.  Alpha students may choose to live with other Alpha students in Alpha House, which is located in Campion Towers.

Collegium comprises two of the five 3-credit academic courses freshmen may take in the Fall semester. All Collegium courses fulfill Core and/or Major requirements. Collegium students are also co-enrolled in FE100: The First-Year Experience, which is a 1-credit elective. Collegium students live together in Collegium House in Campion Towers.

FE 100 is a 1-credit elective that serves as an “extended orientation.” It helps orient students to life at Loyola and life in the City of Baltimore.

How many First-Year programs can I take?

Only one. Each program is unique. Each involves out-of-class activities with the professors, so taking more than one would overload your schedule. We want you to have time for other campus activities.

Does Loyola offer other First-Year Living-Learning Communities in addition to Collegium and Alpha House?

Yes.  Loyola offers several First-Year Living-Learning Communities in addition to Collegium and Alpha House which provide a variety of options designed to enhance your experience both in and out of the classroom.  Students will sign up for these communities during their housing registration session at summer orientation.

Students enrolled in Collegium, Alpha House, or the FE 100 Leadership Experience are not eligible for one of these communities since they are already housed with students taking common classes.
