FE 100 Additional Information

The FE 100 Leadership Experience

The FE 100 Leadership Experience is a residential program intended to identify, develop, and encourage leadership among members of the first-year class while living together in community. Students who enroll in the FE 100 Leadership Experience will be housed together on a floor in Flannery O’Connor Hall and will take an FE 100 class that places a special emphasis on exploring the topic of leadership. In-class conversation will be enhanced by out-of-class activities sponsored by the resident assistant and FE 100 instructors.

Other community features include:

  • Opportunities to meet and talk to upper-class student leaders about their experiences at Loyola

  • Leadership programs held in conjunction with the office of leadership and new student programs such as the Emerging Student Leaders Conference, Leadership Week, and Leadership Resource Center Open Houses

  • An overnight trip during the spring semester with the members of the leadership community to reconnect with each other after winter break to discuss personal leadership strengths and how to use those strengths to benefit the Loyola community

  • The opportunity to take the StrengthsFinder assessment and to learn how to apply personal strengths to academics, relationships, and leadership roles

Note: While more than 200 students enroll in FE 100, there are only 32 spaces available in the Leadership Experience, so interested students should sign up now.

The Instructor Team
Each class is taught by a faculty member, an administrator, and an upper-level student, all of whom are willing to spend the time necessary to make your experience at Loyola a positive, valuable one. In almost all cases, the faculty instructor serves as your core academic advisor as well. On occasion, your instructors will bring other people to the class to provide information or serve as discussion leaders.

Classes
Your FE 100 class of 12 to 16 students will meet once each week for the first 12 weeks of the fall semester. The classes are designed to provide you with exciting and thought-provoking activities that will help you get to know your classmates and instructors and introduce you to the academic and co-curricular programs at Loyola.

Requirements
Very little is required of you outside of the class meetings. There will be brief readings and you will be required to submit two or three brief personal reflections on your experiences during the course. Naturally, you will be expected to attend your classes and engage in out-of-class FE experiences.

Common Text Program
The Common Text program will involve every member of the first-year class in reading The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. Your FE 100 class will meet to discuss this book during Fall Orientation in preparation for the Common Text events that take place once the semester begins.

All students who participate in Collegium will also be enrolled in FE 100, which is required of all Collegium participants.
