The Loyola MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching)
Teacher Education with Certification

The Master of Arts in Teaching at Loyola has been designed with flexibility in mind.  Whether you are a recent college graduate, experienced classroom teacher, or a career-changer following your inner passion, the MAT program offers the right combination of coursework, internship experiences, and individualized attention to help you reach your goals and achieve certification.

With certification reciprocity  across the U.S., the MAT program has been approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).  Students in the program can choose to become certified at the elementary or secondary level.

"Hands down and without exception, Loyola graduates are among the most outstanding teachers on our staff.  Not only do they excel in the classroom in terms of the quality of their instructional program for every individual student, but they are also all leaders among their peers."
     -Sharon Ward, Principal, Elmwood Elementary

The Master of Arts in Teaching program is grounded in the guiding tenets of Loyola's Education Department: competence, conscience, and compassion and is influenced by the Jesuit educational philosophy which emphasizes academic excellence, reflective practice, and social justice in education.  The MAT program offers a course of studies that is designed to prepare exceptionally qualified teachers who are responsive to the needs of diverse learners.

Recent graduates and career changers will use the content knowledge obtained at the undergraduate level as a foundation for exploring educational pedagogy.  Experienced teachers will gain even better understanding of the latest educational techniques and best practices.  Students are encouraged to identify goals and then can work to achieve them in a learner-centered environment.  Most classes are offered in the late afternoon and early evening to balance various schedules.  The program is available in both a part-time and full-time format to accommodate students who want to complete the program on a fast pace, as well as students who prefer to take a number of years to finish.  Students may start the program in any of our three semesters--fall, spring or summer.

The MAT degree requires 38/39 credit hours for Elementary Certification and 34/35 credit hours in Secondary. Specific information on these concentration areas can be accessed through the links below:
