Admission Requirements

Ideal Candidate Requirements

An entering student must have a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university and should be able to communicate well both orally and in writing. It is expected that the applicant will have two years of professional work experience. Students are accepted from any academic background and no prior business courses are required. However, prior business courses may reduce the number of foundation courses (600-level) that must be completed prior to beginning the MBA core courses. Each applicant's academic transcript will be evaluated and an academic program plan that indicates any foundation course waivers will be provided to each admitted student.

Students in the MBA program must have facility in algebra and graphing of mathematical functions, graphic interpretation, and probability. Proficiency in these areas will be determined through recent college or graduate level credit (B or better in a single course) in finite mathematics, pre-calculus, or mathematical models for business. Proficiency may also be established through superior GMAT performance. If necessary, GB 500, Fundamentals of Math for Business, which is specifically geared to the incoming graduate student without the necessary quantitative skills will be required.

Courses throughout the MBA program require the use of computer software for presentation and analysis. Students can expect to receive assignments using spreadsheets, and they may also be required to employ specialized software, CD or on-line databases, or mainframe systems. An entrance expectation is the ability to design and manipulate spreadsheets and be familiar with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint software at the intermediate level.

The guideline used by the admission committees to give promising applicants the opportunity to undertake graduate work. A careful examination of an applicant's academic and professional qualifications is the foundation of every admission decision. The committees look for previous academic achievement by considering an applicant's undergraduate and graduate records. Work experience (a minimum of two years in expected) is assessed through the presentation of a resume or vitae and professional references. Applicants may be eligible for admission without submitting a GMAT score report. The following provisions qualify an applicant for GMAT waiver consideration: Possession of an advanced degree (e.g., master's level or higher), or the combination of an undergraduate grade point average of 3.25 or higher and at least five years of significant professional work experience, typically post baccalaureate, and a personal interview with a Sellinger School graduate advisor.

Applicants accepted for graduate study will be advised in writing. Individuals will also be informed of any undergraduate courses or prerequisites requiring completion before commencing their academic studies. A program advisor will assist in planning your program. Students are expected to take responsibility for discussing any special needs they may have with their advisor.

A TOEFL score report is required only if English is not your native language or if you have not completed a degree program taught in English. An official TOEFL score report cannot be more than two years old. Official scores must be mailed directly from the Educational Testing Service. Loyola's institution code is 5370.

Applicants who hold degrees or have earned credits from non-U.S. institutions (not study abroad programs) must have a course-by-course evaluation and translation done by a Loyola recognized evaluation services agency. Loyola recommends World Education Services (WES).
