Job Description

The Graduate Assistant for Leadership assists the Director and Associate Director of Leadership and New Student Programs in planning, implementing and evaluating leadership development efforts for Loyola University’s undergraduate population.

Leadership development is germane to Loyola University’s mission to “challenge students to learn and lead in a diverse and changing world.”  Current leadership programs include the Men’s Leadership Conference, the Women’s Leadership Workshop, the Emerging Leaders Conference, the Student Leadership Corps, Leadership Week and others. 

Candidates who can demonstrate a combination of professionalism, creativity, energy, dedication, and a sense of humor are best suited for the work with the student leaders, and within the Leadership and New Student Programs office.  Further, experience with interviewing candidates, facilitating group discussions and trainings, leadership development, and experience in working with college student leaders is extremely helpful.   

Hours & Wages

Status: Must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student at Loyola University.

Period of employment: August 1, 2010 through May 30, 2011.

Hours: Position requires 20 hours per week during both fall and spring semesters, including evening and/or weekend hours.

Remuneration: $13,000 total compensation, with up to 60% of that as tuition remission.

Responsibilities

A.    Assist in the supervision of the six Leadership Coordinators (LCs).  Meet weekly with the LCs to help them develop goals and plans for their portions of the leadership programs.  Encourage them to utilize leadership techniques and perspectives that are consistent with Jesuit ideologies. 

B.  Assist in the creation of learning outcomes and assessment for leadership programming.  Learning outcomes help guide the development of the programming in leadership and new student programs.  In addition to creating learning outcomes for new programs, the graduate assistant assist in the creation of assessment tools for the programs.

C.  Assist with transfer orientations (August and January).  The graduate assistant will be responsible for working as a liaison between transfer students and Loyola in terms of their orientation to campus.  Additionally, working with various offices who will participate in the orientation of the transfers.

D.  Assist in developing and implementing Leadership Week.  Leadership Week takes place during the spring semester and is a time for student leaders to participate in workshops and events to enhance their leadership skills while also being recognized for their work during the school year.

E.  Assist in coordinating workshops for women’s and men’s leadership as well as the Emerging Leaders Conference for first-year students.  Conferences are held throughout the year as a time for students to enhance their leadership skills as well as take time to reflect on the types of roles they would like to achieve on campus.  The graduate assistant will work to register students for the conference as well as to assist in the development of what will take place at the conference.
