Job Description

The newly created Office of Student Engagement, which consists of first-year/new student programs, sophomore year initiatives, and leadership/civic engagement, aims to address the developmental needs of students in transition, deepen students' understanding of principles of a Jesuit education, and promote the development of ethical/civic-minded leaders and community members.

The Graduate Assistant will assist the Director and Assistant Director(s) in planning, implementing, and execution of the engagement programs and resources, including but not limited to retreats, workshops, and social/spiritual events.

Candidates who can demonstrate a combination of professionalism, creativity, energy, dedication, and a sense of humor are best suited for the work within Student Engagement.  Further, experience with interviewing candidates, facilitating group discussions and trainings as well as knowledge of leadership development and first-year and sophomore students is extremely helpful.

Hours & Wages

Status: Must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student at Loyola University Maryland.

Period of employment: The start date for this assistantship is August 1, 2012 through May 31, 2013.

Hours: Position requires an average of 20 hours per week, including significant evening and/or weekend hours at times.

Remuneration: $13,500 total annual compensation, with up to 60% of that as tuition remission.

Primary Responsibilities

A.  Assist in the recruitment, selection and training/development of student leaders/coordinators.

B.  Assist with the supervision of the student leaders/coordinators.

C.  Assist in the recruitment, marketing and promotion of the Office of Student Engagement.

D.  Assist in creating and implementing programs to address the needs of students in transition.

E.  Assist with efforts to encourage student participation in various leadership/civic engagement programs.

F.  Serve as a liaison for Student Engagement to other University departments.

G.  Other duties as assigned.

Detailed Responsibilities

A.  Assist in the recruitment, selection and training/development of student leaders/coordinators:   Coordinate the efforts of office staff in selecting student leaders for the retreat program as well as student coordinators who assist with year-long programming.  Ensure that applications have been read and scored for each candidate, that candidate interviews have been scheduled, and that staff is available for each interview.  Finally, serve as one of the team members who assists in the final selection of the staff.

B.  Assist with the supervision of the student leaders/coordinators:  Meet with the student leaders/coordinators to help them develop goals and plans for various responsibilities.  Encourage them to utilize leadership techniques and perspectives that are consistent with Jesuit ideologies.

C.  Assist in the recruitment, marketing and promotion of the Office of Student Engagement:  Work with office staff to development multimedia marketing strategies to promote participation in programs and utilization of resources as well as maintaining and promoting leadership library and resources to Student Development Division.  This may include updating and maintaining department website and creating monthly departmental newsletter.

D.  Assist in creating and implementing programs to address the needs of students in transition:  Work closely with office staff and other University departments to develop programs which include retreats, workshops, and social/spirit events.  Assist with the maintenance of the sophomore living-learning community which includes monthly floor meetings, educational and social events, and recruitment/selection.

E.  Assist with efforts to encourage student participation in various leadership/civic engagement programs:  Work closely with office staff and University departments to develop programs that integrate themes of discernment, identity and leadership development, social decision making, and transition experiences.

F.  Serve as a liaison for Student Engagement to other University departments:  Throughout the year, the graduate assistant is called upon to be involved in discussions and planning with other departments related to leadership/civic engagement and students in transition.

G.  Other duties as assigned.  While this Graduate Assistant position primarily assists with programming efforts, all staff members are expected to provide assistance in supporting the mission and meeting the goals of the Office of Student Engagement.
