Enriching Classroom Teaching: Materials

SUMMARY

This program enriches classroom teaching at Loyola by providing funds for materials needed to improve a course or to support a new course ($750 maximum or $1,200 maximum for joint proposals). Proposals might include (but are not limited to) materials such as the purchase or rental of films, slides, tapes, books, computer software, or other materials essential to the successful presentation of a course and which are not available from the College or its library. Ordinarily, no more than five of these grants will be awarded in a given year.

The program is not intended to fund the development of new courses or honoraria for guest lecturers. Requests for funding above these limits may be considered on the basis of the quality and imaginativeness of the proposal.

ELIGIBILITY

1. Applicants must be tenured, tenure-track, affiliate or core Loyola faculty members in the humanities and ordinarily may submit only one proposal per year.

STANDARDS FOR PROPOSALS

2. The proposal should explain clearly how the materials to be financed will benefit (a) specific course(s) at Loyola and why the funding should come from the Center for the Humanities rather than other sources in the College. The proposal should include a specific description of the materials to be purchased.

PROCEDURES

3. The proposal should include:

a. the applicant's department, rank, years of teaching at Loyola and elsewhere and a budget;

b. approval of the applicant's department chair expressed in a letter (500 words or less) or by the chair's signature on the proposal;

c. an explanation of the value of the materials or activities proposed to (a) specific course(s) in the humanities (500 words maximum).

DEADLINE

4. PROPOSALS (20 COPIES) MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE PROGRAMS DIRECTOR OF THE CENTER BY THE LAST (WORKING) DAY OF ANY MONTH FOR CONSIDERATION AT THE NEXT MONTH'S MEETING OF THE STEERING COMMITTEE.
