All aspects of the Orientation are required for students.

Depending on the particular schedule for an individual student, departure times can vary. Please make travel plans leaving ample time to ensure your attendance throughout the program.

2013 Student Schedule: Day One

Time  Student Program
9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Check-in
This will take place in Avila Hall. Students (and parents) will receive a folder of information in addition to this year’s common text, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. If possible, following check-in students and family members staying on-campus should take their belongings to their rooms before heading off to sessions.
10:15 – 11:05 a.m. Pre-Session on the First-Year Programs
A chance to learn more about Messina and Loyola 101, academic programs designed to help first-year students with their transitions to Loyola.
10:15 – 10:45 a.m. Pre-Session on Campus Involvement
A chance to learn more about the various Pre-Fall Orientation Programs for all new students.
10:45 a.m. – Noon Lunch
Noon – 12:30 p.m. Welcome Session for Parents and Students
This session is the official beginning to the Summer Orientation program.
12:30 – 1 p.m. Jesuit Education Within the Classroom
Parents and students will have a chance to hear from the dean of Loyola College and dean of first-year students about expectations for academic success.
1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Evergreen Small Group Time
Meet up with your Evergreen leader and the rest of your orientation group.
2:40 – 3:30 p.m. The Core as Your Academic Foundation
The Core curriculum at Loyola lays the foundation for our Jesuit Liberal Arts education. Learn how these courses fit into your academic path. Students will be sent to one of the following major-specific sessions: Business, Education, Speech Pathology, Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences, or Exploring Majors.
3:40 – 4:25 p.m. Meetings with Core Advisors to prepare for registration
This is a chance to meet with the faculty member who will help with your academic registration the next day. Use this time to get your questions answered so that you are ready the following morning to choose your courses.
4:30 – 5:15 p.m. New Student Meet & Greet
Get caught up and compare notes before the evening events begin.
5:30 – 6:00 p.m. Evening Prayer in the Chapel
6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Living at Loyola (Housing and Community Information)
Learn more about what it means to live in the Loyola community. This session will describe the housing process and give students a better understanding of the options they may choose from and the expectations for them in the residence halls.
7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Dinner
8:00 – 9:00 p.m. Realities of College Life
An honest look at some of the ups and downs of college life.
9:00 – 11:00 p.m. Evening entertainment and games

2013 Student Schedule: Day Two

7:30 - 8:00 a.m. Daily Mass
7:00 – 9:00 a.m. Continental Breakfast
7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Advising and Registration, Realities Part II,
Group time with your Evergreen, Housing
Reservations, Student ID photos, Lunch

Each Evergreen group will follow a different schedule through the above activities to allow for individual attention in the advising process. There is no way to find out an individual student’s advising appointment prior to arrival on campus.
Noon – 1:30 p.m. A Glimpse of Loyola: First-Year Fair & Lunch
A chance to learn more about special programs, organizations, and offices that may interest students and parents during their time at Loyola.
3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Departure

This time is set aside for parents to complete the “New Student Survey” which will offer data and conversation topics on our second day of orientation.
1:15 – 1:30 p.m. Coffee Break
1:30 – 4:50 p.m. Information Sessions
A variety of subjects designed to help you as parents to better understand the opportunities and challenges involved for incoming students to Loyola, as well as the support available across the campus. Topics covered will include: Liberal Arts in the Jesuit and Mercy tradition; Life Outside the Classroom; Building a Bridge for Career Success; Academic Integrity; Facilitating the Success of an ALANA (African, Latino, Asian, Native American) Student; Understanding the Students’ Academic Paths; Study Abroad; Disability Support, and more.
4:50 – 5:15 p.m. Parent Meet & Greet
Get caught up and compare notes before the evening events begin.
5:30 – 6:00 p.m. Evening Prayer
6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Dinner with other parents
A relaxing chance to enjoy a meal and visit with other parents.
8:30 – 10:00 p.m. A Sweet Way to End the Day
Dessert and entertainment just for the parents.

7:30 – 8:00 a.m. Daily Mass
8:30 – 10:00 a.m. Billing and Financial Aid Information Session
A chance to talk in-depth about the financial options for supporting a Loyola education.
10:15 – 10:25 a.m. Health Information Session
This session will cover all the pieces of health care at Loyola that parents need to know.
10:25 – 12:15 p.m. Realities of College Life
A creative look at many challenges students face at Loyola followed by a panel discussion with many of Loyola’s top administrators.
Noon – 1:30 p.m. A Glimpse of Loyola: First-Year Fair & Lunch
A chance to learn more about special programs, organizations, and offices that may interest students and parents during their time at Loyola.
3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Departure
