In 2008, the library completed a two-year
addition and renovation project, and
library patrons are now enjoying attractive
new open spaces that augment the library’s rich print,
electronic and reference services. The enhancements have
enabled us to offer the Loyola and Notre Dame communities
and our neighbors an opportunity to share further in the
life and resources of the library, through the Friends
of the Loyola · Notre Dame Library. The Friends enhance
the library’s community through support of its collections
and special events.
Past events include an entertaining
and educational wine tasting conducted
by Paul Lukacs, Wine Editor of Saveur and
Director of Loyola’s Center
for the Humanities. Friends of the
Library also received early notification
of the 2010 Contemporary Catholic
Writers Series Lecture, featuring
Colm Tóibín, as well
as an invitation to join small book
discussion groups where participants
discussed two of Tóibín’s
novels.
Friends of the
Library are invited to join us for
a wide variety of events in the spring
of 2011. This includes “Flannery
O’Connor: Letters from Andalusia,” an
exhibit celebrating Flannery O’Connor’s
ties to Notre Dame and the Baltimore
area. The exhibit will be open during
regular library hours from February 28
through April 23. A full slate of programming,
including discussions of O’Connor’s
writings and a screening of the film
adaptation of “Wise Blood,” has
been planned. For details please visit
the exhibit
website. We are also pleased
to announce that poet and biographer
Paul Mariani will be presenting the third
annual lecture in the Contemporary Catholic
Writers Series on April 7, 2011. Friends
whose membership was current as of early
March received invitations to this event.
If you are a new member, details about
this event can be found on the website for “Flannery O’Connor: Letters
from Andalusia."
Friends are also invited to participate
in the spring edition of "Books
into Film", a programming initiative
funded in part through a grant from the
Maryland Humanities Council. Join us
on March 28 for a screening of “Smoke
Signals,” the film adaptation of
Sherman Alexie’s “The Lone
Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven.” For
more information on “Books into
Film,” or any other programming,
contact Aileen Henrickson, at (410)
