A3a. Children's Literature
Always search SHARC first!
The bibliographic record for the hardback edition may be used for the
paperback edition (including those bound by Penworthy and EconoClad) if
the publisher and number of pages are the same. Therefore, search OCLC
by hardback ISBN, author/title, or title instead of the paperback ISBN
(which is usually what is on the back cover of Penworthy books). EconoClad
books have an additional ISBN solely for the EconoClad binding; again,
search for a hardcover record first.
Award books such as Newbery or Caldecott winners, on the other hand,
often require a new record due to the many editions by various publishers.
Evaluate carefully -- children's books can be quite tricky -- and ask
if you have questions!
In addition to the normal elements, check the following in the bibliographic
record for children's literature:
020 __ ISBN Add paperback ISBN as necessary, qualified by (pbk.) or (EconoClad
binding) as appropriate
049 __ LOYJ [note: CATMe should be set up to print JUV at the head of
the call number on the label when the 049 is LOYJ]
520 __ Summary note, if applicable. If no summary is available, try to
add one. Summarize one from information on the jacket or crib from sources
such as Children's
Literature Comprehensive Database [paid subscription], OhioLink
Catalog, or Barnes & Noble.
521 X_ Grade/Audience level. Add when every possible based on information
from the book, the book jacket, the publisher's web site, the Children's
Literature Comprehensive Database [paid subscription], or Barnes
& Noble.
List indicators & 008 Audience levels
586 __ Awards note, if applicable. Add awards listed, in the format
listed, on the Children's
Literature Subject Page
650 _0 LC subject headings. If no subject headings are available, try
to add at least one. Crib from OhioLink
Catalog, if possible; give to librarian if the OhioLink Catalog records
also lack subjects. It is not necessary to add 650 _0 headings if there
are 650 _1 (LC children's subject headings) given.
Note: For 650 _0, most topical headings should be followed by |v Juvenile
fiction or |v Juvenile literature. Juvenile literature is used for non-fiction
titles, not for "literature".
650 _1 LC children's subject headings.
