COLLECTION MANAGEMENT SERVICES PROCEDURE MANUAL

B4a. Predictive Component Pattern

  1. Most periodicals will have a predictive component pattern.
  2. If the periodical does not have a frequency in either the publication or in the bib record or the stated frequency does not make sense, it may need a non-predictive component pattern. When in doubt, ASK!
  3. Click on the Predictive Component Pattern tab
  4. Click on the down arrow at the end of the box for the Publication Pattern Model
    1. From the drop down list, click on the pattern which best fits the periodical in hand
      1. Patterns are listed in alphabetical order; type the first letter of the pattern (i.e., type "m" for a monthly, "q" for a quarterly) to jump to a section of the list
      2. Some titles are straightforward, some are very tricky
      3. See Linking a Publication Pattern to a Component in the online help for more information
      4. See Publication Pattern Tips for help on choosing a pattern
      5. At this point, to change the chosen publication pattern model, just click on the down arrow again and click on a different pattern
  5. Click on Start Prediction
    1. In the Start Prediction box, fill in the value boxes under the enumeration and chronology information based on the piece in hand:
    2. Enter Day of the Month Expected -- if doing current mail, use date received; if working from list, use receipt date recorded on the CARL printout for the first issue of the current volume
    3. Enter First Issue's Expected Date (enter directly or use down arrow for calendar)
      1. If doing current mail, use date received
      2. If working from list, use receipt date recorded on the CARL printout for the first issue of the current volume
      3. Do not add additional days for a claiming period here. Use the claim interval days in the component details tab instead
    4. Click OK
  6. Click down arrow at end of Issue box to check prediction
    1. If the prediction is good, issue(s) in hand or for current volume may be checked-in
    2. If the prediction is not good, return to the Component Details tab and click delete and start the process of adding a component from the beginning
      1. Components may not be deleted if there are routing list(s) and/or issues claimed
      2. Deleting a component will delete the check-in history for that component
      3. Do not delete a component if the frequency has changed or the volume and date need to be re-correlated due to omitted issues!
  7. Check-in
    1. Highlight and copy title in component name box
    2. Click on Serials Check-in icon
    3. Paste title into the Search For box
    4. Click on Check-in
    5. Changes to individual issues, additional issues, etc. may be entered as needed before the issues are checked-in
    6. Highlight issue(s) to be checked-in (hold down Control key while selecting multiple issues)
    7. Click on Quick Check-in
  8. Return to B4. Creating Check-in Records for Periodicals
