Vol. 2, No. 1 Fall 2004
Phillip Fryer, Media Services Librarian
We are making plans now to deliver digital
media to your classroom, office, desktop, lab, and dorm room (or
suite) directly from Media Services. Digital media will be a Web
link away. We will continue to circulate DVDs, CDs and VHS videotapes
from the library, but the future for media is clearly digital.
Our plans are to fully integrate media into your course management software
(Blackboard in our case) and our library website in order to extend Media Services beyond
the library building. To this end, we will begin beta-testing "Interactive Media on
Demand" with Films Media Group early in December 2004. Films Media (formerly
Films for the Humanities & Sciences) is the largest media vendor for colleges and
universities today. We, along with Boston College, are fortunate to get a first
look at their digital offerings, which can be licensed via multiple options:
streaming, progressive downloading, and, if needed, DVD jukebox delivery. At
present Films Media has already digitized 1100+ titles, with their entire catalog
(9000+ titles) targeted for completion by December 2005. We will provide faculty
with title lists soon. Stay tuned!
