Catholic Periodical and Literature Index - Now Online!

John Breitmeyer, Reference Librarian

The Catholic Periodical and Literature Index (CPLI) Online is the product of a partnership between the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) and the Catholic Library Association (CLA). The database covers all aspects of Catholic faith and life, and includes over 370,000 citations of articles and reviews published in Catholic periodicals, papal documents, church promulgations, and books about the Catholic faith that are authored by Catholics and/or produced by Catholic publishers. Indexing for CPLI Online corresponds to the print version of CPLI, published by the Catholic Library Association. CPLI covers content from over 200 periodicals back to 1981; links to full text are provided for a significant percentage of cited articles.

The search parameters in CPLI are similar to those of ATLA, but there is the added capability of searching by papal document date, as specifically as year-month-day format if desired (e.g., 20030402 for April 2, 2003). CPLI Online represents a significant enhancement of the print volumes that the Library has collected for many years, and should be a boon for researchers in theology and religious studies, as well as for those with a more general interest in accessing literature related to Catholicism.
