Vol. 2, No. 2 Spring 2005
Research Survival Skills Workshops
Joanne Helouvry, Reference Librarian
This spring, Loyola Notre Dame Library’s Reference Department
offered a new series of research survival sessions aimed at helping
students with their research, saving them time, effort, and frustration.
The workshops, some general and some more in-depth, were held
at both the Library and other campus locations. Business workshops
were offered at the Loyola Columbia and Timonium campus centers
for graduate students. How to Stop Googling and Find Happiness
with the Really Good Stuff, a workshop helping students to become
familiar with general and education databases, was held in the
Library both in the evening and on Saturday mornings during the
semester.
APA (or MLA) the Easy Way, an introduction to RefWorks, the
Library’s new online bibliographic citation
management service, provided students with an in-depth look at
how to streamline the production of notes and bibliographies for
research papers. May the Source Be with You -- Avoiding Plagiarism
gave students an understanding of plagiarism and taught them procedures
for paraphrasing, including conversational reading and note-taking,
and mastering proper citation formats.
Workshops will also be
offered in the fall semester. For information on the classes or
to suggest a walk-in workshop, please contact Susan Cooperstein
at 410-617-6802.
