Two Staff Members Earn Masters Degrees

Jack Ray, Associate Director

Two library staff members have completed their studies for master’s degrees in librarianship and have been promoted to librarian positions. The Library offers partial tuition remission for graduate study in library science or related disciplines; both of these staff members have availed themselves of this benefit. The Library, in turn, is receiving the benefit of their enhanced skills and expertise.

Anna D'agostino Anna D’Agostino completed work for her MSLS degree from the Catholic University of America and passed the comprehensive examination last August. Anna was promoted to Serials/Cataloging Librarian in the Collection Management Services Department. Serials include all kinds of magazines, journals, newspapers, and any other publication that comes out periodically and is expected to continue indefinitely. Because there are so many intricacies and variations, serials are possibly the most complex area of library work; the Library is fortunate to have Anna in this position. Anna has also been invaluable in managing the project of updating records as bound journals are moving to the Laurel Service Center to accommodate renovation of the Library. Anna has literally worked her way up from a summer student assistant’s position, to full-time library assistant (in 2004), to librarian. Her bachelor’s degree is from the University of Maryland, College Park. See the Fall 2004 Bridge article on Anna.

Danielle Whren Danielle Whren received her MLS from the University of Maryland, College Park, in December. Danielle joined the Library staff in 2003 as Media Services Assistant. When the Library reorganized its staff last year Danielle’s responsibilities shifted to production of digital media, especially in collaboration with faculty to support their class instruction. Danielle now works as Digital Access Librarian in the Technology Support Services Department. Digital media development is a cutting-edge area that will continue to grow in importance. The Library expects to be in the forefront in providing access to this type of information resource, and is fortunate to have Danielle on board working on a number of initiatives. See the Spring 2004 Bridge portrait of Danielle.
