Vol. 4, No. 1 Spring 2007
Two New Staff Members Come on Board
Jack Ray, Associate Director
On July 3, 2006, Maurice Scott joined the Library staff as the first ever Evening Maintenance Assistant.
Maurice works at keeping the building cleaned and maintained Sundays through Thursdays from 7:00 PM to
3:00 AM. Adding this new position enables the Library to provide a better work and study environment
during the period of the building project and beyond, when the building will be larger. Maurice has
worked evening jobs for much of his career, and while he says that working until 3:00 AM throws his
sleep patterns out of whack, he enjoys the peacefulness of the Library during the wee hours and
feels he can get a lot done with fewer people around. Outside of work Maurice is active in his church,
enjoys watching baseball and football, and frequently visits the Maryland race tracks (slots at Pimlico
would be bad for the city, he believes).
The novelist Thomas Wolfe claimed "you can't go home again." Cindy O'Malley might not agree with this;
after working at the Library from 1984 to 2001 Cindy moved to the Eastern Shore, but in August 2006 came
back to her old job as Cataloging Assistant. While a job is not exactly "home," Cindy says that
returning to the Library has been "like being back with my family." There have been some new things
to learn, but Cindy finds that the latest programs have actually simplified the cataloging processes.
In addition to her cataloging work, Cindy also does a great job with book repairs. Arts and crafts,
including painting ("Old Masters-style realism"), knitting, quilting, and gardening are her main
interests outside of work; in the past the staff has seen a number of examples of Cindy's artistic
creations.
