Finding Books, Articles & Other Resources
1. Finding Articles

To find periodical (journal or magazine) articles, use the Library's databases.

Directions for using the databases:
  • Choose one of the subject areas listed, then choose one of the databases listed under that category. To choose a specific database by name, (for example, "Expanded Academic ASAP,") click on "Databases by Title" to see an alphabetical list.
  • Some databases will provide you with full-text articles. These databases are marked with a blue circle, or with a half-blue circle if the database contains only some full-text articles. Some databases will give you only citations, and you must then look in the library for the journal in which the cited article was published. Articles from journals not held in the library may be gotten through Interlibrary Loan.
  • Each database is different. Some databases contain articles in a specific subject area, such as education or business. Others can be used for multiple subject areas. Consult a reference librarian for help with using databases.

The Library has many full-text journals on-line. Visit http://www.loyola.edu/library/ejournals_a.htm to see a list of these journals.

2. Finding Books, Journals, and Audiovisual Materials

To find items in the library, such as books, magazines, journals, and videos, use the library catalog.

Directions for using the catalog:
  • Click on SHARC Catalog.
  • Enter terms in the search box to describe what you are looking for.
  • Select a Search Type from the drop-down box, such as "Author" or "Title."
  • Click on Search.
  • Click on individual titles to get the full information, including the item's call number.
  • Use the library directory (shown below) to figure out where in the library the item can be found.
