Welcome to Loyola University Maryland. While most autumns I might say a welcome to our new students and a welcome back to our returning students, with Loyola's recent designation change to "Loyola University Maryland" it seemed more appropriate to welcome you all anew. So why has the designation been changed? The Board of Trustees, after months of conversation with Loyola constituents and the review of extensive research on the topic, has determined that the university designation describes the depth, breadth, and excellence of its programs more completely than does college. One vein of this research may interest you. The extensive market research reinforced the conviction of the Executive Committe and the Board of Trustees that the new designation would benefit Loyola's graduate students. Actually, for some time, the institution has been in practice a university: paraphrasing Webster, a university is a community of teachers and scholars that distinguishes itself from a college in that it provides both undergraduate education and postgraduate education.

With the name change comes a new web presence. Please point potentially interested friends and relatives to the Computer Science Graduate Program overview page. This is an excellent place to start, as it provides a great overview of the Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Special Programs offered at Loyola University Maryland. Also updated are the details found on the Computer Science Graduate Portal. With the designation change, all the changes that I have written about in the past are now official Loyola policy and are (alas slowly) appearing on the official catalogue web page. Hopefully they will answer any questions you might have about future course options, but if not, don't hesitate to get in touch with Lewis, Margaret, or me.
