This Fall, look for a collection of new faces. These Computer Science Boot Camp graduates will have completed an intensive, four-week program, held at Loyola's Columbia Graduate Center during July of 2010. The program provides a foundation in computer science sufficient for an entry level position in computing or entrance into a graduate program in CS such as Loyola's. The 2010 inaugural Boot Camp, funded by a State of Maryland MHEC grant in support of BRAC, has been a grand success. Fourteen campers (eight women and six men who range in aqe from mid-twenties to early sixties) are participating. We hope to run this program again in the future, so if you know anyone who might benefit from a four-week accelerated program designed to bring newbies "up to speed," please have them get in touch with Lewis or myself.

I would like to personally thank Robbie Sabin and Lewis Berman for putting the program together, and Robbie, Julie Anderson, Mohammad Raunak, Jim Glenn, and Matt Hearn for providing the excellent boot camp instruction. Success of the program can be directly tied to their time and (nearly endless!) energy.

Speaking of Fall, registration for the Fall term runs from 12 July to 13 August. Since the Fall schedule went to press last spring, there have been several changes that I want you to be aware of. As always, you can get the latest schedule information through WebAdvisor - www.loyola.edu/webadvisor by filling in three key fields:

    Term: 10/FA - Term Fall 10
    Subjects: CS - Computer Science
Academic Level: GR - Graduate Level

and then clicking "Submit." Let me highlight the major changes.

We have replaced CS714 XML Technologies and Applications with CS715 Developing Rich Internet Applications with Ajax. We have added CS700 Advanced Data Structures and Algorithm Design, and we have moved CS610, the Discrete Mathematics course, to avoid overlapping with either of the introductory programming courses.

CS715, the newly-added Ajax course, would make an excellent elective for anyone having taken CS712 Web Application Development. For those new to Ajax, it allows asynchronous client-side content changes without a complete page refresh and thus without interfering with the display of the existing page. Ajax supports a more interactive and dynamic web surfing experience.
