There are many questions to ask about graduate school.

    • Is it for me?
    • What type of program am I interested in? -- Pure Math, Applied Math, Statistics, Operations Research, etc.?
    • How do I get financial aid? I need it.
    • What school has a good program in Algebra? or Analysis? or ????
    • How many schools should I apply to?
    • What is the Graduate Records Examination (GRE)? Which schools require it? When is it given?

    The First Rule is:

See Your Advisor To Plot a Strategy, i.e. select a list of schools that are right for you and give you a good chance of getting financial aid.

If you click here you will go to a list of graduate schools which we feel have very good programs and that provide a large number of teaching assistantships for financial aid. If we have previous Loyola graduates who have attended the graduate program, there is an asterisk by the name. This list is by no means complete. It is meant as a starting point for you.

Here is a list of rankings of Ph.D. programs in different academic areas provided by U.S.News. Note that in the mathematics section you will find general ranking of mathematics programs as well as separate rankings for mathematical statistics, applied math, algebra, etc. You can also check out rankings in other disciplines such as economics. There is also a separate page for business rankings here. Note that there are other sources for graduate school rankings. For instance, Peterson's also provides information on graduate programs.

    A must read!!!

Each year the American Mathematical Society publishes a book about Assistantships & Fellowships in the Mathematical Sciences. The latest copy is on the bookshelves in the Math Sciences Seminar Room. Please read it in the seminar room. Don't take it away from the area without permission.

The National Academy of Sciences provides information about graduate work in the sciences and mathematics.
