MBA Chile Study Tour - January 5-13, 2007

The 2007 Chilean Study tour was a big success.  Twenty-two students and two professors visited Chile from January 5th to January 14th.  We spent five nights in Santiago, the capital city, and two nights in Viña del Mar, a beach resort.

As always, the tour combined classroom academic study with an experiential learning component.  We arrived in Santiago early Saturday morning. After dropping their luggage off at the Four Points Sheraton, students spent their free Saturday doing a variety of things.  Some hurried to San Cristobal to get a birds-eye view of the city.  Some found places to shop and other relaxed by the pool, after enjoying empanadas.  That evening, we all met at the El Camino Real restaurant for dinner.  The view was spectacular!  Students similarly enjoyed a free cultural immersion day on Sunday.  Some went to the Museum of Precolumbian Art; others went shopping; some toured Santiago.  That night, Dean Dahringer hosted a reception for us at the Hotel San Francisco. This allowed us an opportunity to meet Loyola alums who had graduated from a joint MBA program between Loyola and Universidad Alberto Hurtado.

The next day, we began our site visits.  The site visits are the highlight of our academic experience in Chile -- an opportunity to visit multinational corporations, Chilean businesses and U.S. companies doing business in Chile. The site visit allows students an opportunity to have a dialogue with senior Chilean business executives.  During the course of the week, students enrolled in GB 748 (International Marketing) visited General Motors, Coca-Cola, and Johnson & Johnson.

Students enrolled in GB 779 (International Ethics) enjoyed a Human Rights tour (left photo), visited ACHS (below and left) and InfoCap (below).

Combined, the classes visited Telefonica (right photo), Codelco (below) and Concha y Toro (below and right).

Thursday ended our week in Santiago, but not our time in Chile.  We left Santiago by private coach and made our way to Viña del Mar, stopping for lunch at a winery, Indomita.

We arrived at the beach at about 4 PM in time to check in to the hotel and enjoy the beach, casino or early shopping.

The next day we were taken by private coach to Valparaiso, a port city.  We toured the port, visited the Esmerelda, a training ship for the Chilean Navy.  We then made our way to the Naval Museum for a tour and private lunch provided by our host – Mr. Rudy Sanzana (the father of one of our students).

We returned to our hotel in Viña in time for an afternoon at the beach, an evening of fun and time at the casino (not to mention time to finish the site visit reports or to study for the final!).
