Valerie Boyd, an essayist and nonfiction writer, published
Wrapped in Rainbows, a biography of Zora Neale Hurston, in 2002. Only the second complete biography done on Hurston,
Wrapped in Rainbows won the Georgia Author of the Year Award in nonfiction, an American Library Association Notable Book Award, and the Southern Book Award for 2003. Currently an associate professor and the Charlayne Hunter-Gault Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at the Grady College of Journalism at the University of Georgia, Boyd is finishing her current book,
Spirits in the Dark: The Untold Story of Black Women in Hollywood, to be published this fall. A graduate of Northwestern University, Boyd is the former arts editor at
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and received her MFA in creative nonfiction from Goucher College. Her work has appeared in
Step Into a World: A Global Anthology of the New Black Literature, Ms., Paste, The Oxford American, Essence, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Creative Nonfiction, African American Review, The Scholar, and
Feminist Online as well as other publications.

Human trafficking survivor and nonprofit founder James Kofi Annan will speak at Loyola University Maryland for Freedom Week 2012, which is dedicated to raising awareness about modern-day slavery. Annan’s presentation will describe his life as a child slave and the changes he has witnessed through his work in abolition. He will also present countless ways for students, businesses, organizations, and other individuals to take action to end child slavery. The event is free and open to the public. No tickets required.

The evening will feature a keynote address by Barbara Chatton, Ph.D., professor emeritus at the University of Wyoming, titled "Anyone Can Fly: Wise Words for Teachers from Children's Literature." Literature provides much more than just reading practice, writing models, and narrow behavioral themes. Good books for young people allow them (and their teachers) to experience empathy, seek justice, laugh together, and to hope for a better world. Dr. Chatton will reveal some of these riches through readings from picture books, poetry, and novels for young people.
The keynote address is followed by a presentation of the 2012 Literacy Leader and Literacy Educator of the Year Awards. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
