Magis Theater of Loyola, sponsored by campus ministry, will present a staged reading of Song of Songs, the biblical book of erotic love, on the weekend of Saint Valentine's. The brief work explores the variations of love between a young man and a young woman. Alegorically it depicts God's mysterious love for Israel, the Church, and the individual soul. The performances will occur in the Fava Chapel on the first floor of Hammerman Hall. A question-and-answer session will follow the reading. The event is free and open to the public. Robert Audi, Ph.D., professor of philosophy and David E. Gallo professor of business ethics at the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business will give an address on ethical business. Audi is the author of 13 books, including the recently published, Business Ethics and Ethical Business, as well as more than 200 papers on the subject. The lecture is part of Ethics Week, a speaker series hosted jointly by the Sellinger School of Business and Management and Loyola College of Arts and Science to promote ethical business behavior. Rev. John O’Malley, S.J., university professor at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., will address topics including the two traditions of schooling that have defined education in the Western world since at least the 15th century: academic and professional training offered by universities, and the more general education offered by the humanistic schools that sprang up during the Renaissance. The lecture will analyze these traditions, contrast their core values, and show how the Jesuits negotiated between them. He will conclude by presenting six “fundamental options” that resulted that characterize the Jesuit tradition of education. Fr. O’Malley’s address will be followed by a question-and-answer period and a dessert reception. Sponsored by Alpha Sigma Nu and the office of mission integration. The event is free and open to the public, but RSVPs to brandreasik@loyola.edu are requested by Feb. 15.

Modern Masters Reading Series to feature Linda Bierds

Raised in Anchorage, Alaska, Linda Bierds is the author of numerous books of poetry including First Hand (Putnam, 2005), The Seconds (2001), The Profile Makers (1997) and The Ghost Trio (1994), which was named a Notable Book Selection by the American Library Association. Bierds has received several Pushcart Prizes, as well as grants and awards from the Seattle Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ingram Merrill Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Poetry Society of America, and the MacArthur Foundation, who praised her in 1998 as "a poet whose attention to historical detail and to narratives of lyric description sets her apart from the prevailing contemporary styles." She has taught English and writing at the University of Washington since 1989, and lives on Bainbridge Island in Washington.

Born in Belencito, Colombia in 1961, Maurice Kilwein Guevara grew up in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with degrees in English and psychology in 1983, and received an MFA in creative writing from Bowling Green State University in Ohio in 1986. Since then, he has published four collections of poetry, two of which, Postmortem (1994) and Autobiography of So-and-S Poems in Prose (2001), trace his early experiences en route from Colombia to Pennsylvania. The third, Poems of the River Spirit (1996), explores similarities between the two countries and cultures that so powerfully influenced his life. In his latest collection, Poema (2008), Guevara rethinks the interconnectedness of form, context, and meaning in a poem. Guevara is a professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he teaches graduate-level courses in creative writing and Latino studies. His work has appeared in numerous anthologies and literary magazines.
