| Founded in 1946 by the U.S. Congress, the Fulbright Program was created to provide U.S. students with the opportunity to share their knowledge and abilities with students from other countries. Students awarded a Fulbright Grant may pursue graduate study in over 140 countries. Grants may be awarded to students in their final year of graduate study, those who have recently graduated, as well as to those already in the process of working towards their master's or doctoral degree. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in communicating and understanding verbal and written forms of the host country's language. Fulbright scholars may be awarded Full or Travel Grants. Students receiving a Full Grant are provided with funding for travel, tuition, fees, books, living expenses, insurance, and relevant orientation courses. Travel Grants are designed to provide students studying in Germany, Hungary, and Italy with funding for travel, insurance, and relevant orientation-class costs. Teaching assistantships to 13 countries are available. Applicants must complete a universal application form regardless of the particular grant for which they are applying. Applications must be completed electronically at the Fulbright Grant Website, and in paper format. Students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate study are not allowed to submit applications directly, but must return them to their faculty coordinator for review prior to submission. Final application deadline for Loyola is October 8. Fulbright national deadline is October 19.
