Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Overview:  The Goldwater Scholarship was established in 1986 by the U.S. Congress to honor the senator whose name it bears.  The scholarship provides funding for sophomores and juniors preparing for research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.  Approximately 280 Goldwater Scholarships are awarded annually throughout the United States.

Eligibility:  Goldwater scholarships may be awarded to sophomores and juniors.  Students applying for this award must desire to pursue a career of study or research in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.  All applicants must be U.S. citizens, are required to have earned at least a "B" (or its GPA equivalent) throughout their undergraduate studies, and must be included in the top 25% of his or her class.

Value:  Students awarded the Goldwater Scholarship before their junior year will receive 2-years worth of funding for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, with the maximum allotment equaling $7,500 per year.  Those who awarded the scholarship before their senior year will receive similar funding for a period of 1 year.

Application:  Applicants for Goldwater Scholarships must be nominated by the faculty representative of their undergraduate institution.  Each 4-year school may nominate up to 4 applicants during this process, which does not allow for direct application by students themselves.  Information regarding Loyola's faculty representative is listed below. Application materials may be found on the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Web Site.

Deadline:  Final application deadline for Loyola is October 14.  Goldwater national deadline is February 1.
