James Madison Fellowship

Overview:  The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation was established by an act of Congress in 1986.  The foundation provides funding for students seeking their Master's degree in history, political science, or education.  Fellowships are granted to at least one student from each state with additional awards contingent upon remaining scholarship funds.

Eligibility:  Madison Fellowships may be awarded to college seniors or to recent graduates who desire to pursue a Master's degree in an approved subject area related to history, political science, or education.  All applicants must be U.S. citizens and are required to teach American history, American government, or social studies in grades 7-12 for one full year following the completion of their graduate degree.  Junior fellowships may be awarded to students who will be entering into full time graduate study, while senior fellowships are intended for  teachers who plan on part-time graduate study.

Value:  Students awarded Madison Fellowships will be provided with funding for tuition, room and board, books, and related fees equaling a maximum of $24,000 over the full course of graduate study.  Madison Fellowships are granted for a maximum of 2 years of full-time study or 5 years of part-time study.

Application:  All applicants are required to complete an application form and to obtain 2 faculty recommendations.  Application materials must be received by the Madison Fellowship Foundation no later than March 1.  All application and recommendation forms may be found on the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation Web Site.

Deadline:  Applications must be received for review and endorsement prior to the national deadline of March 1.
