George Mitchell Scholarship

Overview:  The Mitchell Scholarship was created by the US-Ireland Alliance in 2000 to honor former United States Senator George Mitchell's role in the Northern Ireland peace negotiations of the 1990's.   The Alliance annually awards 12 Mitchell scholarships to American students interested in pursuing graduate study in Ireland.

Eligibility:  Scholarships are open to American citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 who will have obtained their Bachelor's degree before beginning scholarship funded study.  Competition is open to all majors.

Value:  Each Mitchell Scholarship provides funding for tuition, housing, travel, and certain living expenses during 1 year of study at an institution of higher learning in Ireland.

Application:  All applicants are required to complete an online application form and register 5-8 people who may provide recommendations.  Full-time students applying for a Mitchell Scholarship are additionally required to receive endorsement from their current institution.  All application, recommendation, and endorsement forms may be found on the US-Ireland Alliance Web Site , and are due by October 6.  If included among the 20 finalists chosen by the Selection Committee, students are required to attend an interview session in Washington, D.C. in November.

Deadline:  Applications must be received for review and endorsement prior to the national deadline of October 6.
