National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships

Overview:  Each year, the National Science Foundation awards approximately 900 graduate fellowships to students from around the country.  These awards are intended to help maintain diversity in the field of science while also helping to further knowledge in scientific domains.

Eligibility:  Fellowships may be awarded to students in the beginning stages of graduate study.  This includes those in their senior year of college, those preparing to enter graduate school, and those beginning their second year of graduate study.  These fellowships may be awarded to students studying in research-based master's or doctoral programs in approved scientific areas such as engineering, mathematics, and computer science.  For a complete list of approved subject areas refer to the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship Application Guidelines.

Value:  Students awarded a graduate fellowship will be provided with 3-years worth of financial support which may be used within a 5 year period.  Fellowship funding includes a $27,500 stipend and a cost of education allowance equalling $10,500 per year.

Application:  Applicants must complete an online application form which may be accessed on the National Science Foundation's Application Information page.  In addition, applicants are required to submit their GRE general test scores directly to the selection committee.  Scores on GRE subject tests are also recommened.  

Deadline:  Final application deadline is November 1.
