Harry Truman Scholarship

Overview:  The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation provides graduate funding to students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and who desire to pursue a career in the government or in public service.  The Foundation awards 77 scholarships per year to students from around the country.

Eligibility:  Graduate scholarships may be awarded to students currently enrolled in their junior year of undergraduate study and who are in the top 25% of their class.  Students applying for this award must have records of outstanding leadership and communication skills as well as extensive experience with community/public service.  Students applying for this award must wish to pursue a career in the government or a field of public service.

Value:  Truman Scholarships are valued at $26,000.  $2,000 may be applied towards costs related to the student's final year of undergraduate study, with the remaining funding applied towards graduate costs.  All students are eligible to receive $12,000 towards their first year of graduate study, with an additional $12,000 provided for the final year of graduate study provided that the student will enter into a public service related field immediately following graduation.

Application:  Applicants for Truman Scholarships must be nominated by the Truman Faculty Representative of their undergraduate institution.  Each school may nominate 4 applicants during this process, which does not allow for direct application by students themselves.  Information regarding Loyola's faculty representative is listed below. Application materials may be found on the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation Web Site and are due early February.

Deadline:  Applications must be received for review and endorsement prior to the national deadline of February 5.
