The Udall Scholarship was established in 1992 by the U.S. Congress to honor the Congressman whose name it bears. The scholarship provides partial funding for students entering their junior or senior year of undergraduate study in the environmental sciences, environmental policy or law, or interested in American Indian tribal health care and policy. Some funds are specifically appropriated for individuals of Native American descent interested in these areas. Typically, 80 Udall Scholarships, as well as 30 honorable mention scholarships, are awarded annually throughout the United States. Udall scholarships may be given to students who will be entering into either their junior or senior year of college. Students applying for this award must currently be pursuing studies in the natural sciences pertaining to the environmental policy or law or related fields. Applicants of Native American descent are required to demonstrate interest in health care or tribal policy. Applications are limited to United States citizens who have maintained at least a "B" average throughout their current undergraduate studies. To be truly competitive, focused extra-curricular activities in relevant areas is required. Students awarded an Udall Scholarship will receive up to $5000 to cover tuition and related academic costs. Sophomore nominees, whether awarded a scholarship or not, may reapply for competition during their junior year. Honorable mention scholarships provide $350 to each recipient. Applicants for Udall Scholarships must be nominated by the faculty representative of their undergraduate institution. Each 4-year school may nominate up to 6 applicants during this process, which does not allow for direct application by students themselves. Information regarding Loyola's faculty representative is listed below. Application material packets are mailed to faculty representatives during September. Applicants are required to complete information forms, write an essay, and obtain 3 letters of recommendation and current transcripts. Completed application packets are to be submitted by faculty representatives in early March. Applications must be received for review and endorsement prior to the national deadline of March 6.
