Loyola Clinical Centers offering summer literacy programs January 18, 2017 | By Stephanie Weaver The Loyola Clinical Centers (LCC) is offering two summer programs—Reading & Succeeding and Ready, Set, Read!—to help children’s literacy and language skills. Reading & Succeeding, open to children in grades 1-12, helps students gain literacy skills, confidence, and an enthusiasm for learning. Instruction in a one-on-one session is available for children entering grades 3-12. After assessments, instructors are able to create individual instructional plans based on student needs. Individual sessions run Monday through Thursday for one hour. Small group sessions are available for children entering 1-8, Tuesday through Thursday for an hour and a half. The sessions are grouped according age and instructional level. The children are assessed and instruction targets the needs of the whole group. Reading & Succeeding is taught by literacy graduate students. The instructors follow daily lesson plans, focusing on a balanced literacy approach targeting the students’ needs, with engaging hands-on, multi-sensory activities. Reading & Succeeding is especially beneficial for children who are having difficulty with reading and writing in school, aren’t enjoying reading, are not confident readers or writers, or who are struggling in one area of reading—phonics, comprehension etc. Ready, Set, Read!, which is open to children ages 4-7, aims to build the bridge between oral language and their emerging literacy skills. The program—offered in small group sessions—is co-taught by literacy and speech-language pathology graduate students who evaluate the children’s language and literacy needs and plan instruction to best meet the needs of the group. The program is hands-on, multi-sensory, and enriching, focusing on pre-reading skills, phonemic awareness, and metacognitive strategies. The summer literacy programs are offered in Baltimore and Columbia. Limited space is available. For, pricing, registration or more information, call 410-617-1200 or visit the LCC website.
