Greetings from Loyola University Maryland’s office of corporate and foundation relations! It’s been a very exciting fall at Loyola. Not only did we complete the expansion and renovation of our Donnelly Science Center, we are also the grateful recipients of the largest individual gift in University history—a $5.2 million contribution from Ed Hanway, ’74, chairman of Loyola’s Board of Trustees, and his wife, Ellen. In this issue, we are proud to introduce you to Raenita Fenner, Ph.D., and Megan Olsen, Ph.D., two outstanding new professors who have joined the University with the support of a $500,000 grant from the Luce Foundation, and tell you about a unique program for the caregivers of brain injury patients made possible by a grant from the Foundation for Spirituality and Medicine. Professors in engineering, computer science join Loyola through Clare Boothe Luce Program A year ago, Loyola announced its receipt of a $500,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation’s Clare Boothe Luce Program, a grant to support the addition of two female, tenure-track faculty members in computer science and engineering. Today, these promising professors are teaching Loyola students, advancing scholarship, and supporting the University in its efforts to strengthen all of its programs in the natural sciences. Barbara has devoted much of her time, energy, and spirit to caring for her husband Walt since his 2004 stroke, which left him with significant aphasia—an impairment of communication abilities common in those who have experienced strokes and other brain injuries. Walt has received speech-language therapy at the Loyola Clinical Centers for years. Last summer, Barbara learned about a new LCC program with a specific focus on her needs: Care for the Caregivers.
