A Note from Interim Dean Fenzel
I hope this message finds you well, with 2012 off to a happy, healthy, and productive start. The spring semester is always a busy time at the University and in the School of Education, and the campus has been electrified by the great success of the men’s basketball team. We also have some outstanding speakers coming to campus this spring to carry on our focus on becoming culturally competent educators of students in our diverse classrooms. I hope you’ll have a chance to explore some of the many programs we will host on our campuses in the coming months.
My relationship with Loyola dates back many years, and I have had the privilege throughout my time with the University to work with and benefit from our relationships with a number of key partners throughout Baltimore, Maryland, and beyond. In my role as interim dean, my engagement with and regard for these partners and the contributions they make to our students, our faculty, and our programs has grown and deepened significantly. Each of the stories featured in this issue touches on one of the School of Education’s key educational partnerships. I hope in reading them you will come to share our conviction that the goal of bringing about fundamental change and improving education and educational opportunities for all children is not one to be pursued or achieved in isolation—but realized through the collaborative efforts of a variety of dedicated individuals and organizations committed to the highest ideals of social justice.
