January Workshop Helps Seniors Prep for "Life after Loyola"

Seniors can still register for Life after Loyola, a two-day workshop to be held over Martin Luther King, Jr., weekend, Jan 15-16, on the Evergreen campus. The program aims to offer graduating students valuable advice and hands-on experience in topics that will be extremely important to their happiness and success once they leave Loyola.

Sessions will cover topics including:

  • Speed interviewing
  • Résumé critique
  • Job search tips
  • Applying to graduate school
  • Social networking etiquette
  • A business dinner featuring discussions on professional appearance, wine selection, and meal etiquette
  • Work ethic, corporate culture, and professional dress—transitioning from the classroom to the office
  • The first 90 days in a new job
  • Finding housing
  • Financial planning
  • Engaging in a new community
  • Information for young alumni

Life after Loyola was developed by Karyl B. Leggio, Ph.D., dean of the Sellinger School of Business and Management. Confident that our students have the academic backgrounds and technical knowledge they need to excel after graduation, Leggio was eager to offer the students advice in areas not covered in traditional coursework that can mark the difference between a promising job or graduate school applicant and one who wins a coveted slot.

"As Loyola graduates, our students have a great deal going for them as they interview for jobs and explore graduate school opportunities," she said. "But as a university, we need to make sure they have the extra poise it takes to achieve their potential once they leave our community."

Leggio and colleagues in the Sellinger School, alumni relations, the Career Center and other campus departments are working to recruit area employers to participate in many of the sessions, including speed interviewing and job search skills.

Registration for Life after Loyola costs $175; seniors can sign up at www.loyola.edu/lifeafterloyola.
