In addition to the two members of the Class of 2012 who received Fulbright Fellowships for this year, many of our current students spent the summer pursuing internships designed to give them an advantage over their peers when they enter the workforce. Students such as Veena Meer, ’12, who also received the Judith C. Gilliom Workforce Recruitment for College Students with Disabilities Award for her work as the U.S. Air Force assistant disability program manager at the Headquarters Air Force Equal Opportunity Office. Or the four students accepted into the Maryland Governor’s Summer Internship Program, where they worked on projects with senior-level public administrators and policy makers. Or the four who got an inside look at a Madison Avenue marketing agency. Or the six seniors—Dela Allorbi, Melissa Cifone, Alexis George, John Lenart, George Martinezc, and Wade Turri—who completed 12-week internships at insurance firm Transamerica in downtown Baltimore, complete with final presentations to company employees.
These experiences are an essential part of the Loyola education, and The Career Center at Loyola is committed to helping students find academic year and summer internships that fit their interests and goals. It’s never too early to start thinking about these opportunities. Please encourage your sons and daughters to reach out to the staff at The Career Center to begin exploring their internship options.
Our students are also taking an active interest in their role as citizens this fall, with a Rock the Vote initiative sponsored by our Student Government Association. The voter registration deadline is Oct. 16, so please encourage your sons and daughters to register and make their voices heard!
As we move into the middle of the semester, academic loads increase, and student stress levels are likely to as well. Be sure to visit our Counseling Center’s website to familiarize yourself with the resources that are available to your students and encourage them to seek the supports they need to be successful. And if you haven’t had “the talk” about alcohol and stress, there’s no time like the present! You can find resources and information here.
I hope to see many of you on campus at the end of the month for Family Weekend 2012! In the meantime, please be sure to find us on Facebook for all the latest in Loyola University Maryland news.
